In the begining Zebra was a plain animal. His coat was white as snow & he spent most of his days keeping clean. When he was not getting rid of every speck of dust he would admire his reflection.
All of the animals agreed that Zebra was a handsome beast, his coat was indeed pure as snow, all of the animals wished they were as clean & beautiful as he.
As time went on the other animals began to get sick of Zebra, they knew he was vane but as a drought started to set in they really needed access to the waterholes side, Zebra always blocked their way.
The weeks went on & the drought got worse. There were more animals around the waterhole now so space was limited, the animals could not get in to drink, when they did Zebra would chase them away. He did not like the ripples their drinking created, his reflection was always blurred.
It was not long before the other animals grew tired of the grumpy Zebra & decided to do something about it.
All of the animals agreed they needed to lessen the zebras beauty, this in turn would keep him from the water hole allowing them to drink in peace.
The next day all of the animals went to the water together, there were too many animals for Zebra to chase away. As he stood there thinking of what to do, baboon lashed out with a clump of crusty mud.
The mud stuck to Zebra's side. Giraffe then kicked another lump of mud which stained zebras flanks. Elephant rained more mud in, so did kudu. Soon Zebra was covered.
All of the animals laughed at Zebra & as there were so many animals around he could not get to the water, his coat became stained. The Zebra did not like this & ran to roll in grass.
The grass took the mud away but still some remained, his fur stained forever.
When ever you are at a waterhole, you will also hear a Zebra call. He is happy the waterhole is clear & he will have another chance to try wash the mud away. Try as he might he will never succeed.
