Notice! It is highly recommended that visitors exercise extreme caution if choosing to try to enter the River 'S' Unit Auto Tour Route. The roads have not been plowed or maintained. If you choose to brave the entrance road, you do so at your own risk!
The Carty Unit is open as always, please use caution on the paths as they are icy and slick, and while it is beautiful out, snow and ice can weigh down branches, so be especially careful under trees. The Refuge office will be closed today, February 21st.
Drive safely and be careful out there everyone! https://ridgefieldfriends.org/visit-the-refuge/
This little fella is a Yellow-eyed penguin and is thought to be one of the rarest penguin species. Numbers have dropped around 75% since the mid 1990s, with possible extinction looming if trends continue, all this mainly down to human activities. I know they are doing a huge effort to protect them down here in NZ so fair play to them and hopefully we will see more of these guys walking around in the future.
